2 de febrero: DÃa Mundial de los Humedales
El 2 de febrero se celebra el DÃa Mundial de los Humedales, fecha que se seleccionó para conmemorar el dÃa en que se adoptó la Convención RAMSAR, el 2 de febrero de 1971, en una ciudad del mismo nombre en Irán. Es un dÃa clave para recordar a la comunidad nacional e internacional la importancia de estos valiosos y frágiles ecosistemas, y por eso es la fecha en que empezó el anuncio de la iniciativa.
La campaña "Misión Humedales: Vida para Tod@s" surge de las organizaciones académicas, la sociedad civil organizada e individuos preocupados por el ambiente en Costa Rica, ante la situación que está generando el dragado, la modificación del cauce y la construcción de un canal artificial entre el rÃo San Juan y la Isla Portillos por parte del gobierno nicaragüense.
En la conferencia se presentarán los objetivos, el enfoque y la fecha de la Gran Marcha Nacional que convocará esta iniciativa, asà como las maneras en que la población y otras organizaciones pueden involucrarse.
Los organizadores consideran que es vital que la población en general conozca de buena fuente la relevancia de los ecosistemas de humedal, para crear conciencia sobre la necesidad de su conservación no solo en la zona norte, sino en todo el paÃs y en el mundo.
